The Dalai Lama| The Shambhala Sun offers the best selection of his teachings available on the web. Tenzin
Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is the spiritual leader of
the Tibetan people and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the US Congressional Gold Medal. Unique in the
world today, he is a statesman, national leader, spiritual teacher, and
deeply learned theologian. He advocates a universal "religion of human
kindness" that transcends sectarian differences.
The Dalai
Lama is universally respected as a spokesman for the peaceful and
compassionate resolution of conflict. He has also been actively
involved in bringing together Western scientists and Buddhist
meditators, and is a founder of the Mind & Life Institute where
such meetings of the minds can take place. Shambhala Sun is proud to share this selection
of work by and about this unique teacher and world leader.

The Dalai Lama in the Shambhala Sun
If the twenty-first century is to be
one of peace and caring, says His Holiness the Dalai Lama in this
heartfelt personal plea, we must develop a new ethic of human values
that transcends religion.
The Dalai Lama inspires a new generation of urban activists who know
that inner and outer peace are one. Barry Boyce on two cities where
they’re making a difference.
For thirty-five years Pico Iyer has been a friend, observer,
and student of the Dalai Lama. In this exclusive and heartfelt essay, he
reveals the simple human secret that makes His Holiness the most beloved
spiritual figure in the world.
An editorial by Melvin McLeod.
Pico Iyer on the Dalai Lama’s
unerring ability to home in on those who most need his love.
The world's most famous "simple monk" is far more than simple and not just a monk. Barry Boyce is there as the Dalai
Lama displays the many faces that make him such a unique and important figure.
For all their material success, says Pico Iyer, many Japanese feel alienated and spiritually starved. The responded hungrily to the Dalai Lama's teachings on his recent tour of Japan.
In Francisco Varela, the Dalai Lama found a kindred spirit. Together — along with some of the greatest names in neuroscience and modern Buddhism — they laid the groundwork for a scientific revolution. Barry Boyce tells the story in this Shambhala Sun feature.
Teaching young people about compassion is one of the most important things we can do for them, says the Dalai Lama, and for the future of humanity. Melvin McLeod reports from Vancouver, where His Holiness talked to students and education experts about schooling for the heart as well as for the mind.
This
teaching by the Dalai Lama, adapted from The Compassionate Life,
published in 2001, explains how the Buddhist teachings of mindfulness
and compassion lead inevitably to feelings of self-confidence and
kindness. As human beings we all
have the potential to be happy and compassionate people, and we also
have the potential to be miserable and harmful to others.
A teaching on practices to generate bodhichitta by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Forget
all the fancy meditation practices, says His Holiness the Dalai Lama,
the real heart of Buddhism is complete commitment to others. In this
commentary on The Way of the Bodhisattva, he describes the awakened
heart of the Buddha, which is his vow to attain enlightenment for the
sake of all sentient beings.
Robert Thurman on the meaning of the Dalai Lama to the modern world.
I
believe that all human beings are of the same nature. At the mental and
emotional levels we are the same. We all have the potential to become
happy and nice people and we also have the potential to become very bad
and harmful people. The same potential for these things is present
within all of us; the important thing is to try to promote the positive
and useful sides and try to reduce the negative sides.
