Enlightenment for Idiots

Anne Cushman, a frequent contributor to Shambhala Sun, has long been known for her personal essays on yoga and motherhood. This year, however, Cushman surprised us all by coming out with her first novel, Enlightenment for Idiots, which follows Amanda, a twenty-nine-year-old yoga teacher, on a tumultuous journey to India as she researches a guidebook on finding inner peace.

Now, this fun, juicy novel published by Crown/Shaye Areheart, has just been named one of Booklist’s top ten first books of 2008. As reviewer Brad Hooper says, those with books on this prestigious list “will undoubtedly become second novelists. In other words, these novels show talent above and beyond the usual first time out.”
