Khyentse Rinpoche: “Don’t grow up too fast.”

Over on the Chronicles of Chogyam Trungpa, they’ve posted an audio file of Khyentse Rinpoche’s advice for teenagers, with a focus on the angst, depression, and anger that come with the territory of being a teenager. Those of us who probably could stand to grow up a little might find something useful here, too. A bite:

“If you want to be brave … then take a vow: Next six months, whoever it is, you will not yell at them. That’s a difficult one, huh? But it will give you amazing, amazing power. Because … you all want to be indestructible, don’t you? Well, if you want to be indestructible, why volunteer yourself to become an easy target?”

And here’s a reminder for us all, especially heartening coming from a master teacher:

“Failure is good. You have to fail many times… To shape the human character a lot of things have to go wrong, you know.”

Listen the whole piece here. And don’t miss “What Makes You Not a Buddhist,” Rinpoche’s incredibly clear examination of just that, as published in Shambhala Sun.
